The Mechanical Understanding Test (MUT), formerly named the Work Skills Test, is a 65-item, 30-minute test of the comprehension of mechanical principles. There is a new, more comprehensive manual available and an enlarged and enhanced norm base (n = 1,000+). The MUT is a gender-unbiased measure of mechanical comprehension, i.e., there are no differences between the average scores of men and women. This is in sharp contrast with the other tests of mechanical comprehension, which have a strong male bias. Yet, despite having no gender bias, the MUT is as predictive as any other measure of this important characteristic. Also, the standardization of the MUT has revealed no systematic racial or ethnic differences.
Knowing how things work--especially things in our physical world--is an important ingredient of success, both in many work settings and more generally in our ever-more technologically demanding environment. Understanding of the physical principles that make things work is especially important to success in those jobs that involve working with machines, equipment, gauges, and the like.
The Mechanical Understanding Test (MUT) was designed to assess how well people understand the principles underlying how things work in the physical world; that is, how well they understand the basic principles of physics and mechanics that determine success in handling and manipulating objects and machines, both with and without tools or other work aids. Individuals with greater understanding of these basic principles will more quickly learn how to operate machinery, will be more effective in their use of machinery, will be more ready to troubleshoot mechanical problems that typically arise, and be generally more productive in a technological work environment.
