Knowing how organizations work--especially how managers need to behave--is an important ingredient of on-the-job success. Understanding the principles that guide organizations and managerial behavior is especially important to success in those jobs that involve working in organizations and functioning effectively as a manager or executive.

The Management and Organization Skills Test (MOST) provides a measure of an individual's knowledge and understanding of how relatively complex organizations function as well as knowledge of the competencies and skills required for success in management and executive positions.  The purpose of this instrument is to differentiate between those individuals who possess this knowledge and understanding of general organizational and management principles and those who do not. Possession of this knowledge and understanding has clear implications for job performance in management and executive positions.

MOST has been designed as a measure of individual differences for use in pre-employment screening, as a diagnostic measure to be used in career planning and development, and in assessing the overall knowledge and skill levels of organizations.  The results of MOST testing have been shown to be useful in understanding the levels of business knowledge and understanding on both the individual and organizational level in a variety of business and other organizational settings.

MOST consists of 165 multiple-choice items that present a representative array of organizational business scenarios and is divided into three separate sections.  The first section begins with a series of 25 statements describing a condition, situation, or action.  The respondent is to decide whether the content of each description would contribute to or detract from overall organizational functioning.  12 situations or scenarios follow this set of statements, each requiring the individual to choose among four or five responses or actions most suitable to that situation. The second (and shortest) section of MOST lists ten broad strategic planning issues--e.g., vertical integration, customer driven-- and asks the respondent to decide whether each addresses what kind of business the company will engage in or how that business will be conducted.  Finally, the third section maintains 45 multiple-choice questions that tap general knowledge about appropriate managerial behavior and organizational functioning.  Overall, therefore, this test is intended to assess both an individual's knowledge of management concepts and his or her ability to apply those concepts to organizational and management issues.  The various situations, statements, and queries are relatively simple descriptions of issues in organizational functioning that are easily understood and do not require specific industry experience or education in any particular fact of business administration or management.

MOST is designed for use with applicants at any job level in a business setting.  The overall score should be interpreted in terms of the possession of knowledge and understanding of management and organization principles and the implications of these principles for individual behaviors with respect to work and organization effectiveness.
