Take A Good Look teaches sales associates how being alert and providing great customer service is the most effective way to stop shop-thieves before they can steal. Giving great customer service is also the easiest, most immediate and least expensive means of stopping shoplifters, also called shop-thieves because they are thieves. And deterring theft helps to assure financial stability for the store, which translates into jobs and benefits. Billions of dollars are lost annually due to theft, causing many stores to close.


There are a variety of motivations for shop-thieves to steal – drugs, gambling, livelihood and lifestyle.Some individuals steal as a full time job, as a way to support themselves. Gangs are making a large impact and, more recently, large international crime rings are more of a presence than ever before, clearing entire shelves and racks of merchandise. The internet, with auction sites and discount selling sites, is a large driver of store theft, making it easy to move stolen merchandise.In addition to thieves who come with the intent to steal, you may also encounter shop-thieves who don’t come in to steal. An opportunity presents itself, they’re tempted, and they take it.

By developing the habit of taking a good look at each customer who enters the store, and providing good service, sales associates are able to observe details that can reveal whether a shopper is truly a customer or a thief looking for a chance to steal. Filled with dramatizations, Take A Good Look focuses on individual shop-thieves who work alone or in pairs.Sales associates gain insight on how and when shop-thieves will try to steal. Program training points include:

  • Greet each customer who comes into your store or into your department.
  • Observe details as customers enter your store or your department – what they’re wearing, what they carry and how they carry it.
  • Read your customer’s body language.
  • Keep attention focused on your customers.
  • Observe shopping “behavior,” or the “way” in which customers shop – do they shop like a normal customer, or do they handle items “differently?”
  • Deter shop-thieves by providing great customer service.
